<p>Grand Valley State University students Meagan Roche and Matt Brainovich have been awarded prestigious Boren Scholarships to study a foreign language in another country for the 2012-13 academic year.</p><br />
<p class="p2">The selection process for the Boren Awards is rigorous. For the third consecutive year, the Institute of International Education, which administers the awards on behalf of National Security Education Program, received a record number of applications for both the undergraduate Boren Scholarship and the graduate Boren Fellowship. This year, 1,014 undergraduate students applied for the Boren Scholarship and 161 were awarded, while 575 graduate students applied for the Boren Fellowship and 119 were awarded.&nbsp;</p><br />
<p class="p2">Roche, an anthropology major from Howell, will study Wolof, the language spoken in parts of Africa, at the West African Resource Center in Senegal. Brainovich, an international relations major from Rochester, will study Russian at Novosibirsk State University in Russia.</p><br />
<p class="p2">Another Grand Valley student, Shawn Wooster, an international relations and Germanic languages and literatures major from Jackson, was named an alternate, which means he will receive Boren Scholarship funding to study Romanian at Babes-Bolyai University in Romania if another student in the program can no longer attend.</p><br />
<p class="p2">&ldquo;We are very proud of these students and excited for the opportunities that await them,&rdquo; said Amanda Cuevas, director of the Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships at Grand Valley. &ldquo; The Boren Scholarships are extremely competitive and the fact that we have two recipients and an alternate this award cycle demonstrates the high caliber of scholarly accomplishment these students have achieved at Grand Valley and on a national level.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p><br />

<p>Professor Fific has provided this introduction to the nature of his work on decision making:&nbsp; </p><br />
<p style="TEXT-AUTOSPACE: " class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt">Stopping Rule Selection (SRS) Theory<o:p></o:p></span></strong></p><br />
<p style="TEXT-AUTOSPACE: " class="MsoNormal"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT"><o:p></o:p></span></p><br />
<p style="TEXT-AUTOSPACE: " class="MsoNormal"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">The critical step facing every decision maker is when to stop collecting evidence and proceed with the </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">decision act. This is known as the stopping rule, and it is thought to be the central component of </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">successful decision making. For example, one have to decide how many houses to visit before making </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">the final decision to buy one. Similarly, how many doctors&rsquo; opinions one should have before making a </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">final decision about the risky surgical procedure. &nbsp;&nbsp; If a decision maker has perfect knowledge of all aspects </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">of the environment that generates the evidence, the Bayesian calculus can be used to find the most optimal stopping rule. <o:p></o:p></span></p><br />
<p style="TEXT-AUTOSPACE: " class="MsoNormal"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">The experimental evidence so far has documented several violations of the optimal rule predictions. This </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">evidence suggests that human decision makers do not use the optimal stopping rule. More importantly, </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">perfect knowledge about the environment is not available for most decision makers because the world is </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">constantly changing. Even if decision makers could possess perfect knowledge, the human cognitive </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">system has strictly limited computational powers, thus making the use of the optimal rule unrealistic.<o:p></o:p></span></p><br />
<p style="TEXT-AUTOSPACE: " class="MsoNormal"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">Over the years, several unconnected explanations have been proposed that suggest nonoptimal approaches </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">can account for some of the observable violations of the optimal stopping rule in human decision making.&nbsp;</span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">The current research proposes a unifying explanation for these violations based on a new stopping </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">rule selection (SRS) theory. The main innovation here is the assumption that for any given decision </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">problem, a decision maker draws from a large set of different kinds of decision strategies and stopping </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">rules and is not limited to using a single stopping rule. The SRS theory hypothesizes that there is a storage </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">area for stopping rules&mdash;the so-called decision operative space (DOS)&mdash;and a retrieval mechanism that is </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">used to select stopping rules from the DOS. The SRS theory has shown good fit to challenging data </span><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRomanPSMT">published in the relevant literature so far.</span><span style="COLOR: #1f497d"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p>Overcast skies and some rain weren't enough to keep hundreds of people <br /><br />
away from &quot;Lakers on Lake Michigan,&quot; an open house event hosted by Grand<br /><br />
Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute and the Lake <br /><br />
Express ferry on Saturday, May 5.</p><br />
<br /><br />
<p><br /><br />
<iframe width="500" height="284" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/oe5Rn31B47w?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p><br />
<p><br /><br />
The open house, which was held to highlight the partnership and mutual <br /><br />
interest in the Great Lakes between Grand Valley and the Lake Express, <br /><br />
gave people a chance to see the high-speed ferry and learn about Grand <br /><br />
Valley's groundbreaking freshwater research projects.</p><br />
<p><br /><br />
The Muskegon-to-Milwaukee ferry took passengers on two short excursions<br /><br />
on the lake, showing off the boat and its capabilities. Each ride <br /><br />
through the Muskegon Lake channel and into Lake Michigan took about an <br /><br />
hour.</p><br />
<p><br /><br />
Louie the Laker even showed up to take part in the festivities.&nbsp;</p><br />
<p><br /><br />
The event highlighted how AWRI and the Lake Express celebrate West <br /><br />
Michigan&rsquo;s Blue Water Economy &mdash; a term used to describe businesses and <br /><br />
initiatives in the greater Muskegon area that involve water resources.</p><br />

</p><br />
<p><br /><br />
Two students from Grand Valley have won the annual Angela Andrews Ryan <br /><br />
Scholarship to study in Perugia, Italy. Angela Tramontelli, a senior <br /><br />
from Troy, and Mario Amaya Velazquez, a junior from Grand Rapids, were <br /><br />
awarded the scholarships in April.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
The opportunity is made possible through the Perugia Sister City <br /><br />
Committee of Grand Rapids Sister Cities International, in conjunction <br /><br />
with the Italy&rsquo;s premier language school for foreigners. The scholarship<br /><br />
includes tuition for one month of intensive instruction in Italian <br /><br />
language and culture at the university, in Perugia, plus a generous <br /><br />
grant from the Perugia Sister City Committee to cover other expenses <br /><br />
including airfare.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
All applicants were required to submit two faculty letters of <br /><br />
recommendation and write essays describing why they would like to study <br /><br />
Italian language and culture and how it fits in with their educational <br /><br />
goals.&nbsp; <br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Tramontelli will study in Perugia in June. She is a psychology major <br /><br />
and applied linguistics minor and plans to graduate from Grand Valley in<br /><br />
December 2012. Tramontelli has studied Italian at Grand Valley and <br /><br />
plans to attend graduate school to pursue a doctorate in <br /><br />
sociolinguistics or social psychology with hopes of becoming a <br /><br />
university professor.&nbsp;<br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
&ldquo;I want to study the ways language is used to create and transmit <br /><br />
cultural values and identities,&rdquo; Tramontelli said. &ldquo; This award ties in <br /><br />
so well with my research interests and career goals and will give me a <br /><br />
unique firsthand perspective.&rdquo;<br /><br />
&nbsp;<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Velazquez, who has taken five semesters of Italian at Grand Valley, <br /><br />
will also study in Perugia in June. He is an international relations <br /><br />
major and plans to minor in Arabic, with hopes of pursuing a career with<br /><br />
the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service officer. After a <br /><br />
month of study at Universita per Stranieri, Velazquez will spend a <br /><br />
semester at the University of Perugia, with other Grand Valley students <br /><br />
in an exchange program between the two universities.<br /><br />
&nbsp;<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Both Tramontelli and Velazquez said this will be their first time <br /><br />
abroad and credited faculty mentors at Grand Valley for their guidance.</p><br />

						<p>
<p>It is the very highest kind of accolade that comes to those on the recommendation of not only collegaues who have known them for 30 years, but also many students.&nbsp; When the CLAS Academic Advising Center's Caroline Cascini was presented with the AP Commitment to Students Award, it was this very sort of praise she was receiving.</p><br />
<p>One student said that Caroline was&nbsp;<span style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN" lang="EN"><font face="Arial"><font size="2">the sole reason she had the strength to remain in college and finish her degree. Another said, &quot;<span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN">Anyone can tell that Caroline Cascini does her job to the fullest in the smiles of the students leaving her office. &quot;&nbsp; A third admitted, &quot;<span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN">For a while there, I kept Caroline's office number on my cell phone's speed dial. &quot; </span></span></font></font></span></p><br />
<p><span style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN" lang="EN"><font face="Arial"><font size="2"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN">Perhaps most telling of all is this: &quot;<span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN">Caroline's nomination for this award is bittersweet for me. All this time I considered myself her favorite. Now however, I see that Caroline passed out 'special treatment' to all of her clients.&quot;</span></span></span></font></font></span></p><br />
<p><span style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN" lang="EN"><font face="Arial"><font size="2"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" lang="EN">All of CLAS celebrates Caroline's commitment and effectiveness.</span></span></span></font></font></span></p><br />

<p>Grand Valley student Andrea Fleming took third place at the Opera Grand Rapids Collegiate Vocal Competition held April 22.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Nine finalists from area colleges and universities participated in the competition, hosted by Aquinas College. The event provided the opportunity to perform and be recognized for excellence by a professional opera company, and win cash awards ranging from $100-$250 for the top three winners. The first and second place winners were both from Hope College.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Fleming, a senior from Holt, is a double major in music and math. For the competition finals, she selected to perform an operatic aria from Leonard Bernstein&rsquo;s &ldquo;Trouble in Tahiti.&rdquo;&nbsp; While performing the piece, Fleming not only showcased her powerful voice, but also interjected some personality.
