Jeff Steffel was born in Chicago Illinois and grew up in Bangor, Michigan and completed his undergraduate work at Michigan State University where he received his B.S. degree in Criminal Justice. In 1972 he enlisted in the Michigan State Police spending seven years as a trooper and advancing through the ranks to retire as a captain in 1999. While working as a sergeant in the training division he began classes at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1979 and subsequently graduated with his J.D. degree and passed the state bar examination in 1982. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1991.
Mr. Steffel’s focus until his retirement combined his work as an executive manager in the state police combined with the application of the law in police work. He has lectured for the International Chiefs of Police, the Michigan Chief’s of Police as well as legal lectures to troopers and local police officers through numerous departments and universities in Michigan. Since coming to GVSU in the fall of 2001, he has written three revisions to both his search and seizure and criminal law and police procedure manuals in conjunction with two state grants providing legal update to all police officers in the state. Work is being conducted on a third state grant that will again encompass training for all police officers in 2009. Mr. Steffel classes typically include criminal law, constitutional law and property law.
