History

The Laker Children's Fund started in 2014 with the annual football game between Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University, which is known as the annual tradition of Battle of the Valleys. During the entire week before the annual game, each school raises money for a charity of their choice beginning at 12:01 AM on Sunday lasting until midnight of the following Friday before the game.

In the past, funds raised by Grand Valley State University during Battle of the Valleys were donated to a charity of their choice. Starting in 2014, Grand Valley State University wanted the funds raised by Battle of the Valleys to funnel into one specific fund that the university could allocate to specific non profit organizations on an as needed basis. To fulfill this need for a fund, the Laker Children’s Fund was created.

Initially, funds for the Laker Children’s Fund were solely raised during Battle of the Valley’s week. Over time, these funds are being raised through other events taking place at the University.
