My research focuses on ways to improve student learning in chemistry courses. One area of research explores students' perceptions of their laboratory coursework, especially as it relates to their identities. Qualitative analysis of classroom observations and interviews allow us to make improvements to laboratory policies and curriculum. But in order to understand the experiments they perform in the laboratory, students need to be able to construct mental models of particulate phenomena. Technology can help students to visualize the behaviors of atoms and molecules. I investigate how using and creating these visualizations helps students to develop their conceptual understanding of chemistry.
