Blue Pedestrian Bridge across Grand River Closing 6/4

The Blue Bridge across the Grand River near GVSU Eberhard Center will be closed for most of the summer beginning next week:

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This $1.1 million dollar project includes concrete repair, expansion joint repair, cleaning and coating of steel,

electrical lighting upgrades, and approach work for the Blue Bridge. The Blue Bridge will be closed to pedestrians

for the duration of this work. The pedestrian detour is Front Avenue to Pearl Street to Campau Avenue

Scope of Work:

• Bridge Approach and Bridge Deck Surface will be patched and rehabilitated. Sidewalk will be replaced on

the west end of the bridge. The Bridge deck will be patched and sealed, and joints will be repaired.

• Steel Truss Bridge elements will be cleaned and re-painted blue.

• Upgraded Lighting System and Controls will be added to the bridge including overhead color changing LED

lights and linear color changing LED flood lights on bridge piers.

Tentative Schedule*:

The project is expected to begin work on or about June 4, 2013.

The bridge is planned to be reopened to pedestrian traffic on August 30, 2013.

5/3 River Bank Run - Impact to GVSU campus and classes

This Saturday is the annual 5/3 Riverbank Run. Many Pew Campus Buildings are affected by the race route, so limited access to campus will be available due to street closings http://www.53riverbankrun.com/parking-and-traffic.php

DEV/EC classes have been moved to CHS for 5/11/13 only, and CHS hours have been extended to accommodate this change.

DEV lot will be closed beginning Friday night and will re-open once race has ended (around noon).

Seward Ramp will be open from 5:30a-1:30p.

Hill Dash to CHS will be running (due to CHS classes), but will have a detour. If utilizing this service, please allow extra time to reach your destination.

Volunteers Needed - GR Home for Veterans

Dear GVSU

The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans has an annual carnival for their residents. While many have family members that come to escort them to the carnival, there is a large need for volunteers to escort those without any family members. You would meet your veteran and either walk with or push their wheelchair to the on-site carnival.

The event is Saturday, July 27 from 11am – 3 pm. Volunteers need to be at the event at 10:15 am for a mini-training.

This is a great event for student organizations or youth groups too (should be at least 16 years old). Bring a friend or your family to help.

I am challenging the GVSU community to have at least 25 volunteers for this event.

Let’s give back to those who put their life on the line for our freedoms.

With the opening of the Seidman building, changes to parking lot designations become necessary. In order to better accommodate all customers and parking availability, the following changes will take place on April 29, 2013.

$1000 Scholarship - Legal Studies Majors

Legal Careers Panel - 3/28/13 6pm

On March 28, 2013 from 6pm to 7:30 PM in room 138E of the DeVos Center the Legal Studies program, in coordination with GVSU Career Services and the Legal Studies Advisory Board, is sponsoring a panel on legal careers. The purpose of this panel discussion is to inform the current students of the career path that each panelist has chosen so that they can benefit from the “real world” what can be done with a Legal Studies and/or law degree. Panelists will have prepared a 5-10 minute presentation of their background and work experience. And will also have another 10-15 minutes from to discuss that they do on a daily basis. The forum will be very informal. After introductions the panelists will engage in a Q&A with the students.

It is with great pleasure that the Kent County Sheriff Department name Detective Justin DeBoode the 2012 Deputy of the Year - Law Enforcement on this 22nd day of February 2013.

Justin began his career on February 14, 2000 as a County Police Cadet, working part time while attending college full time. From May to July 2000, Justin attended a Grand Valley State University sponsored summer trip to Tubingen, Germany. He graduated from college in Fall 2002 and, on January 13, 2003 was hired as County Patrol Officer, providing services to the residents of Kent County by enforcing laws and traffic regulations, investigating crime, and utilizing crime prevention techniques.

Justin is currently assigned to the Detective Bureau serving on the Major Case Team and Tactical Team. Justin's attributes demonstrate the model deputy. The professionalism and thoroughness of his work is something to be admired and his personal life is beyond reproach.

Justin has had many successful investigations and convictions in the five years as detective. He has a strong work ethic and personal morals. He is assertive and displayed heroic actions during his career. Justin is known to go above and beyond the call of duty to comfort victims of crime. He is a tremendous asset to those who work with him and gives 100 percent to each case.

Throughout his career, Justin has received five Letters of Recognition and three Letters of Commendation for services characterized by outstanding ability and exemplary performance. In 2007, Justin was awarded a Distinguished Police Service Award for his part during a standoff with a dangerous, armed murder suspect whereas his life, along with his fellow deputies' lives, were endangered and they had to use deadly force.

Detective DeBoode's constant commitment to his profession is overwhelming evidence of his dedication, teamwork philosophy, and enthusiasm for his patrols, investigations, and willingness to help others.

Emphasis is placed on ethical and legal decision-making and regulatory monitoring and control of white collar and corporate activity. Prerequisite: Junior status. 3.000 Credit hours

Community Leadership Scholarship - Due April 1st

Community Leadership Scholarship

Grand Valley State University

Leadership for community and economic development results from education, experience and a commitment to work toward a vision. The Community Leadership Scholarship seeks to support and honor Grand Valley State University students who have demonstrated their willingness to combine community service with the pursuit of their professional vocations through a one-time scholarship. The amount of this award will vary between $1,500 and $2,500 based on the quality of the applicants and the earnings on the fund. The award supports those students who pursue entrepreneurism to improve quality of life. This scholarship benefits students who major in any field, with a preference for those who major in business or public and nonprofit administration. The scholarship was established by the founding members of the Grand Valley University Foundation Leadership Committee, who seek to advance new generations of business leaders and community philanthropists.

Application Criteria:

1. Recipients must be entering their junior or senior undergraduate year at Grand Valley State University.

2. Candidates must give evidence of significant community service performed while a college student at Grand Valley State University and give expression to their desire to be engaged in community service throughout their lives, either through their professions or as volunteers, board members and so forth.

3. Recipients must be enrolled with full-time status as a degree-seeking student at Grand Valley State University.

4. Candidates shall be making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University.

5. Demonstration of financial need is not required.

Fall 2013 BSW Candidacy Applications Now Available! - Due 5/24

The Candidacy Application Packet is to be submitted on Friday, May 24th, 2013 for early

consideration. After May 24th applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until Friday

August 16th. The information is to be submitted to the School of Social Work office in its entirety.
