What the Sustainability Certificate Program Could Do for You
Date: February 21, 2014
What could the Sustainability Certificate Program do for you?
Find out from an alum.
"Grand Valley State University's Sustainability Graduate Certificate Program effectively launched my career to the next level! With over 25 years of middle management experience, the Sustainability program not only provided me with valuable triple bottom line decision-making framework, but also created an opportunity for me to become an administrative health leader in Michigan. On September 6th, 2013, the Board of Health Commissioners voted unanimously to hire me as District Health Department #2's next Health Officer and Chief Financial Administrator for Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda Counties. Executive leadership positions are highly competitive, and the Sustainability program provided a convincing platform to gain support from all the elected commissioners. The course work ignited my desire to work in communities in need to provide fiscal stability, forge meaningful partnerships to build strong communities, and create health equity opportunities for all citizens. I was able to successfully complete the Sustainability program while working full time and the combination of online classes and in-person workshops lead to many dynamic discussions, resource sharing and the ability to network with other professionals. The instructor, Haris Alibasic, is recognized as a Sustainability expert and teaches with passion and in a student-centered manner. His valuable feedback allowed for tremendous professional growth in the areas of economic development, environmental issues and social justice/health equity. The required comprehensive Sustainability Plan practicum allows for practical experience that utilized the coursework's many resources and increased my confidence in my ability to evaluate an organization's goals, data, and effectiveness of reaching desired outcomes. I highly recommend GVSU's Sustainability graduate certificate program, and I look forward to continuing to foster sustainability efforts in my new organization and community."
