United Way Schools of Hope 2013

The Heart of West Michigan United Way's Schools of Hope tackles the problem of illiteracy with In School Tutoring, After School Literacy Programs and Family Literacy classes. Their goal is to ensure that all Kent County students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. Nationally recognized, Schools of Hope was selected by United Way Worldwide to be part of its prestigious Performance Excellence Group based on its track record of success. The charge as a leader within the Performance Excellence Group is to share their strategies with other communities nationwide to make an impact on the problems of illiteracy. The College of Community and Public Service Dean, Dr. George Grant, Jr., participated in the Schools of Hope reading program by reading to a group of Grand Rapids Public Schools students from the first through third grades.
