Where are you located?
We have 2 physical locations – in Allendale: 200 Student Services and in Grand Rapids: 101B DeVos
Can I join my student in their appointment?
We typically recommend that students attend their appointment by themselves. This allows the career advisor to connect directly with the student and develop a relationship for working together throughout their time at GVSU.
How does my student find an on-campus job?
We have a great system, called Handshake, where on-campus employers will post their open positions for students to apply to.
How can my student find an internship?

In what year do students do internships?
Internships are most typically completed a student’s junior year. However, we believe that more experience is better. Depending on the employer, there are opportunities for students to complete an internship as early as their first year.
Can my student do a job shadow?
Yes! Job shadowing is an excellent way to learn about the world of work. Check out more information on job shadows and informational interviews HERE, and encourage your student to meet with their career advisor for help in finding professionals to shadow.
Can alumni use the Career Center?
Yes, the Career Center may be used by alumni for free, for life.

When should students attend career fairs?
Students are encouraged to attend career fairs as early as their first semester. Career fairs and other events with employers are a great way for students to explore the world of work and begin making connections.
Does GVSU have connections to employers?
We do, lots of them. We have an employer team that is constantly building relationships with companies and organizations in the West Michigan area and beyond. These relationships allow us to connect our students and alums to great opportunities.
Should my student have a job while in school?
On-campus jobs are a great way for students to gain skills and get experience that will allow them to develop as a professional. Research also shows that students who work part-time on-campus (10-15 hours a week) actually have higher GPAs. Students can check out Handshake for on-campus employment opportunities.
