How to be a Good Intern
Once you have secured an internship, it’s important to make the most out of it! Here are a few ways to do this:
Be professional
- Always show up on time (if not a little early)
- Dress according to the organization’s standards (if you don’t know what they are - ask)
- Know and adhere to the organization’s web and technology policies (ie: cell phone, IPod, and Facebook use)
- Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude
Be a human sponge - this is a learning experience after all
- Ask a lot of questions
- Volunteer to attend professional development opportunities/meetings/events
- Ask for and apply feedback from supervisors and co-workers
- Take good notes
Continue networking
- Make an effort to meet people outside the area you’re working in
- Introduce yourself to senior leadership
- Connect with other interns
As a reminder, when you are completing an internship you are still a GVSU student, and representing GVSU in the broader community. The student code of conduct still applies.
