James M. Copeland Living Center

Curving in an S shape along the winding rim of a wooded ravine are three traditional living centers named after founding members of the University's governing body: James M. Copeland House, Kenneth W. Robinson House, and Grace Olsen Kistler House. The traditional living centers are coeducational units with separate floors for male and female students connected to central lounges.

James M. Copeland Living Center was the first dormitory (now titled residence hall) on the GVSC campus. It is named for James M. Copeland, a charter member of the Grand Valley State College Board of Control and resident of Greenville, Michigan.  Copeland served as President of Security National Bank of Manistee and Wyoming State Bank in Kent County. Copeland Living Center is a two story structure completed in 1966. It was originally called the James M. Copeland House and accommodated 102 man and 100 women. Copeland was renovated in 2001 and now houses mostly freshmen students in the traditional dormitory style.
