Current Research Opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students:

  • 2011 Michigan Section AWWA Fellowship for Water Quality and Treatment Study: The Research and Technical Practices (RTP) Committee of the Michigan Section of American Water Works Association (AWWA) invites applications for fellowship study in areas related to water quality and treatment. The goals of this fellowship are to stimulate greater involvement of the Michigan’s academic institutions and both graduate and undergraduate students in conducting studies in drinking water related fields and to encourage innovative and creative solutions to priority problems of the drinking water community. For more information, please contact Alex Yavich at (616) 975-0847 or yavichal@osenv.com.
  • The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce that our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program is now accepting applications. This fellowship program will provide a number of full-time summer research opportunities at the University of Michigan for talented undergraduate students interested in Molecular and Integrative Physiology and a future in biomedical research. Funding is also available for students with quantitative backgrounds such as engineering or computational sciences that desire a summer research experience studying diabetes or digestive diseases. Our fellowship website is: https://www.physiology.med.umich.edu/programs/undergraduate and the website contains additional information on the fellowship program and details of the application process. The fellowship deadline is February 18, 2011.

  • Through a partnership with Grand Valley State University, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, a biological field station in Hastings, MI, offers a number of rare qualities and natural habitats that make it attractive to the student and faculty member in the natural sciences. Situated in Southwest Michigan, the Institute's 661 acres includes wetlands forests, and meadowlands, where students can engage in hands-on and practical field experiences through undergraduate research, field trips, and courses. Summer research grants are available. To learn more visit:  www.cedarcreekinstitute.org.

  • The Helen Way-Klingler College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University offers an Undergraduate Summer Research Program in the Biological Sciences. The program runs June 2- August 8, 2008. For more information and application, see http://www.biology.marquete.edu. Application deadline is January 31, 2008.
  • The Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids announces the availability of undergraduate research internships for Summer 2008. The flyer describes these internships and indicates how students can apply. Other opportunities for the participation of undergraduate students in our research programs also exist for the academic year, either for credit (at your home institution) or for pay. More information is available at www.vai.org, or by email to gradschool@vai.org.
  • The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Michigan State University runs an Undergradaate Research Fellowship Program every Summer which offers an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to undertake a research project under the direct supervision of a faculty member and to expose the students to cutting edge technologies and ideas. The Program is also an opportunity for students to look at research as a possible career choice and is a useful stepping stone to graduate school for those interested in Pharmacology, Toxicology, or a related discipline. Details on the Program and application procedures can be found at www.phmtox.msu.edu/surf/undergrad.php. You can find out more about the Department and the research activities of individual faculty at www.phmtox.msu.edu. The official deadline for applications is 15 March - however, late applications may be acceptable if Dr. Cobbett is contacted by this date. Please contact Dr. Cobbett for further details. Peter Cobbett PhD, Dept Pharmacology & Toxicology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1317, (517) 353-5479 cobbett@msu.edu.
  • The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians is posting for a total of seven seasonal staff to work on the Lake Sturgeon project and the Stream Restoration project.  Staff will be assisting graduate students and Biologist in collecting biological data in the Manistee River Watershed. Previously we have been able to help students find housing in Manistee at a reduced rate.  We will again try to accommodate seasonal staff.
  • Each summer, Mote Marine Laboratory hosts a 10-week program focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 8-10 advanced undergraduate students. Students are paired with Mote scientists and develop and complete an independent research project related to their mentors research interests. Students gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide research symposium. Students attend research seminars and workshops on career skills in science,  Students also have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences.
  • The 2008 REU session will focus on major threats to estuaries such as aquatic pollution, natural toxins, habitat alteration, and coral reef decline. Information about mentors, research topics, dates, and application procedures are posted on the REU web site (www.mote.org/reu). Applications are due on February 15, 2008.
