Scholarship Opportunities John Shontz Native Plants Scholarship- Named in honor of John P. Shontz, Professor Emeritus of Biology. Applicants must be a sophomore, junior, or senior biology major with a plant biology emphasis. The due date is March 1, 2010 at 5pm to Connie Ingham in the Biology office.
Michigan Garden Club Scholarships - Applicants must have a minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.0 and completed 30 credits at GVSU. The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in: Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Forestry, Conservation, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Environmental Concerns, Land Management and/or related Fields. The Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc., Scholarship is a competitive scholarship of $1000.00 and will be awarded to one student based on the information provided on this application. The due date is November 13th, 2009 at Noon. John Salski Memorial Award - Named in the honor of the late John Salski, a biology alumnus, whose financial gift made this award possible. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, be an undergraduate majoring in Biology or NRM, and have completed 15 credit hours of Biology or NRM coursework at Grand Valley. The award is given only for Biology or NRM summer activity or research. The due date is February 26, 2010 at 5pm to Connie Ingham in the Biology Office. The Waddell-Treanor Native Plants Endowment. This endowment exists as a memorial to the generosity of Barbara Wadell and Arlene Treanor. It awards scholarships, research awards and internship awards to undergraduates and promotes outreach activities that promote education about the native plants and their preservation, use in landscaping, conservation and remediation. The objectives of the Waddell-Treanor Native Plants Endowment shall be to:
1. Award scholarships to Grand Valley undergraduate students
2. Award small research grants to Grand Valley undergraduate students
3. Support student internships to learn more about the use of native plants in landscaping
The due date is March 15, 2009. Barbara Waddell Native Plants Scholarship- Named in honor of the late Barbara Waddell, benefactor of the Waddell-Treanor Native Plants Endowment. Supports research of a sophomore, junior or senior, who is majoring in Biology or Natural Resource Management. The due date is March 15, 2010 at 5pm to Connie Ingham in the Biology office. Arlene Treanor Native Plants Internship- Named in honor of the late Arlene Treanor, benefactor of the Waddell-Treanor Native Plants Endowment. Provides financial support to a sophomore, junior or senior, who is majoring in Biology or Natural Resource Management and who is doing an internship in a plant-related business or organization. The due date is March 15, 2010 at 5pm to Connie Ingham in the Biology office. There are numerous internships and scholarships availble to students from GVSU's Annis Water Resources Institute. Padnos International Scholars Program - This program is intended to support substantive study abroad programs for GVSU undergraduates. Recognizing the benefit that long-term study abroad can provide to students throughout their lifetimes, the Barbara H. Padnos International Scholars program provides opportunities for students to engage in long-term study, thereby acquiring an in-depth understanding of the langugage, culture, and values of another country. The program provides scholarships for yearlong study abroad programs. The average scholarship ranges from $5,000-$15,000. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant - As part of its efforts to recognize and encourage academic achievements in all disciplines, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to sponsor this Study Abroad Grant competition. The board of directors encourages qualified undergraduates in all areas of study to apply. The program is designed to help support you as you seek knowledge and experience in your academic field by stuyding abroad. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi awards 50 Study Abroad grants of $1,000 each. Application deadline is February 24, 2010 Phi Kappa Phi Emerging Scholar Award - Phi Kappa Phi's board of directors recently approved the creation of a new awards program, Emerging Scholar Awards. The awards will recognize outstanding rising sophomores studying at Phi Kappa Phi member institutions. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi will grant 60 awards in the amount of $250 to students who meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants must not have earned more than a total of 60 semester hours as of July 14, 2008 during their post high school academic career. Hendricks Environmental Education Fund - Applicants must be a graduate of any Tri-Cities area high school or a current Tri-Cities area resident. Applicants must be an upperclassman or graduate school student majoring in an environmental science field. Our World - Underwater Scholarship Society - For over 35 years, the Our World Underwater Scholarship Society has been providing scholarship and internship opportunities for undergraduate students. GVSU Peace and Justice Award - This award emphasizes the cause of peace and justice in the affairs of peoples and nations and/or an increasing sensitivity to the concerns aroused by the presence of nuclear arms and other sophisticated armaments in our world. Tthe award is administered by a faculty committee which makes allocations from its income in ways that are in keeping with the fundamental emphasis of the award. It is open to any degree seeking undergraduate student with personal convictions that match the purpose of the award. West Michigan Chapter Air & Waste Management Association- The West Michigan Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (WMAWMA) is pleased to announce the availability of up to three (3) $1,500.00 scholarships to be awarded to selected students pursuing a career in environmental management. Each successful applicant will receive a one-year student WMAWMA membership. Purpose: To provide financial support to students studying for a career in air pollution control, hazardous waste management or another environmental management field.
