Adjunct and Visiting Teaching Opportunities for Fall Semester 2009
The Biology Department is currently accepting applications for adjunct and visiting teaching positions. Based on qualifications and experience, a number of courses may be available, but instructors for lecture and/or laboratory sections in the following courses are typically needed each semester:
BIO 104 - Biology for the 21st Century - Topics include cell biology, genetics and biotechnology, form and function of the human body, evolution and ecology. Gen. Ed. Lecture and Lab
BIO 105 - Environmental Science - Study of natural ecosystems, their interrelationships, and human impacts and evolution of humans and environmental determinants of their cultures. Gen Ed. Lecture and Lab
BIO 120 - General Biology I - Introduction to cell structure and physiology, growth and development, and genetics. Gen Ed. Lecture and Lab
BIO 328 - Biomedical Ethics - Examination of the values, ideas, and technologies that humans have used, are using, and may use in the future with respect to biomedical issues. The application of ethical theories to practical dilemmas in health treatment. Part of Ethics theme. Lecture.
Please note that the department's staffing needs are variable from semester to semester and specific courses from the list above may or may not be available in any given semester. Also note that morning, midday and evening sections, for a number of courses, are available throughout the week at the Allendale, Pew (downtown) and Holland campuses.
A master's degree in biology or closely related field is required for teaching lecture courses. A bachelor's degree in biology or closely related field is required for teaching laboratory courses. Teaching experience is preferred.
Applications will be accepted until positions are filled. All first-time teaching assignments require a brief committee interview, including a 20-minute teaching presentation with topic to be specified in advance.
Applicants who are qualified to teach any of these courses may send a letter of interest, a copy of their vitae, and unofficial copies of transcripts to the chair of the VAA Committee.
Application materials will be evaluated when the completed packet is received. After that time, applicants will be contacted as soon as possible for employment in the forthcoming academic year.
