Professor Chris Harper

Professor Harper

Professor Harper began distinguishing debits from credits around the same time that Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were battling for baseball’s single-season home run record.  He has served as a senior manager for Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors for most of his career and continues to consult with the firm on a part-time basis.  Chris also served as a corporate controller for four years and founded Durus Consulting, a CPA firm that he operated as a sole practitioner during that time that he was a controller.  He graduated from Grand Valley with his accounting degree in 1999 and earned his MBA from Michigan State in 2002.

Chris was elated when Grand Valley invited him to return to campus in 2005 as an adjunct accounting instructor.  He loves the opportunity to connect with students and to augment the classroom experience with real-life examples from public and private accounting. Chris works hard to make the classroom experience fun and interesting.  He has thoroughly enjoyed being a full-time member of the accounting faculty since 2012.  He loves that interactions with GVSU’s students help keep him (relatively) young!

One of the elements of public accounting that Chris finds most enjoyable is interacting with a diverse mix of people.  The very nature of public accounting exposes a professional to a vast array of business and individual clients.  Because each client’s needs and circumstances are unique, he has never experienced a dull moment in his professional practice.  Crafting individualized solutions for clients provides variety that makes each day different in the life of a CPA in public accounting.

Chris has enjoyed the opportunity to begin working with GVSU’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter.  Beta provides students with the ability to develop networking skills that are critical to the cultivation of a professional career.  Beta allows students to enhance their awareness of opportunities that exist in the accounting profession.  Moreover, Beta membership is an honorable distinction that is highly regarded by prospective employers.

When he isn’t at the office or in the classroom, Chris enjoys flying airplanes, running, bicycling, camping, hiking and spending time outdoors.  He is a licensed commercial airplane pilot. He has competed in two marathons, several half marathons and three triathlons.  Most of all, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Blake and Brooke.
