"Intervention Considerations for Toddlers and Preschool-Age Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder"

The session will identify diagnostic and intervention considerations for toddlers and preschool-age children, including relationship to developmental domains and social communication challenges. Current evidence-based strategies for supporting the communication development of young children with ASD will be discussed with inclusion of responsive language, joint attention, and joint engagement within interdisciplinary models.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define the social and segmental communication impairments common in young children with ASD
  • Describe specific strategies to support social communication development in young children with ASD
  • Identify and respond to language and communication attempts of young children with ASD

About the Presenters ~

Janine L.S. Bartley, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
While pursuing her doctoral degree, Dr. Bartley worked clinically as a speech-language pathologist implementing parent-mediated early interventions for toddlers with a variety of communication difficulties including autism spectrum disorder, conducting multidisciplinary diagnostic evaluations for preschool-age children, and providing school-based services to children. Her expertise and research interests focus on early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, relationship between parent-child interaction and social communication development, and implementing parent-mediated social communication intervention for toddlers.

Denise A. Ludwig, Ph.D.
Dr. Ludwig is an Associate Professor and Interim Director of Clinical Education at Grand Valley State University, teaching graduate coursework in Infant/Toddler/Preschool Language Disorders within Interdisciplinary Models and Advanced Studies of Articulation and Phonological Disorders. Dr. Ludwig has worked in clinical, medical, and educational settings for over 30 years, and holds the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence.

Her expertise is in the areas of interdisciplinary intervention models for the birth to five populations and the integration of speech and language development models within inclusive education settings. Her research interests are parent-coaching and mediated models of intervention for early clinical habilitation, clinical language and social skill intervention for toddlers and preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder, phonological intervention models related to language development, and the scholarship of higher education teaching and learning.
