Several types of assessment are currently in place at GVSU. The University Assessment Committee (UAC) oversees the process of assessing student learning outcomes by reviewing assessment plans, progress reports, and self-studies for all academic majors, academic resources, and special programs. Click here to view the UAC Philosophy of Assessment. In collaboration with the UAC, the Accreditation and Assessment Office implemented a five-phase approach to outcomes assessment, including: assessment plan development, implementation, analysis, reporting, and feedback. This method is designed to facilitate broad changes and improvements in teaching and learning campus-wide. Click here to view the assessment cycle at GVSU. GVSU also recently took part in the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) Longitudinal Lumina Study, a series of computer based tests that measure students' skills over four years. The tests focused on three areas: critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written communication.Click here to view the CLA Institutional Report on Seniors and Freshmen. GVSU will also utilize the Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS). SAILS is a knowledge exam designed to test information literacy skills. In coordination with the Libraries, administration of SAILS is tentatively scheduled to begin in the fall of 2006 with freshmen and winter of 2007 with seniors. GVSU uses the Program to Evaluate and Advance Quality (PEAQ) model of self-evaluation. PEAQ is a comprehensive five-step evaluation process to determine continued accreditation status. The next North Central Academy visit for Grand Valley accreditation will be in fall 2008. (From the HLC website) Many different schools and programs at Grand Valley are subject to outside accreditation. Physical therapy and social work, for example, must meet rigorous standards by professional bodies to show that our graduates meet the credentials for their fields.
