Gillian Rodger will present his lecture "The Past Is a Foreign Country: The Unfamiliar World of Nineteenth-Century Popular Entertainment."
Rodger is associate professor of musicology and ethnomusicology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her ongoing research interests cluster around popular musical theater of 19th-century America and working-class popular culture. She is exploring the early history of variety theater (the form that preceded vaudeville) and its connections to other musical theater forms, including minstrelsy and burlesque.
