Description
Some of the most acclaimed Latin American films will have free screenings in West Michigan during the 4th annual Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival, April 4-7, at Celebration! Cinema North & IMAX and Wealthy Theatre. Featured guests will include Venezuelan filmmaker Juan Andrés Bello and Argentine director Gustavo Taretto on Saturday April 6. See individual listings for each date.

The festival will include screenings of films from Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina, focusing on a wide range of contemporary subjects, including "La Sirga/The Towrope," a 2012 film from Columbia, directed by William Vega.

In his directing debut, Vega presents a poetic, richly allegorical film about a teenage girl who flees to a rundown inn. She has been driven from her home in the Andean highlands by civil war, as the violence engulfing the country creeps ever closer to her remote refuge. This 89-minute film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

All festival events are free and open to the public with support from Aquinas College, Calvin College, Ferris State University, Davenport University and Grand Valley State University, Mexican Consulate in Detroit, Argentine Consulate in Chicago, Consulate of the República Bolivariana de Venezuela in Chicago, Consulate of Brazil in Chicago, MOSTRA, Chiaroscuro Film Series, Celebration! Cinema North and IMAX, Wealthy Theatre, Radio La Poderosa 640AM e Interferencia 810 AM, Rick Rhoane y Leandro Robles.
