Description
Some of the most acclaimed Latin American films will have free screenings in West Michigan during the 4th annual Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival, April 4-7, at Celebration! Cinema North & IMAX and Wealthy Theatre. Featured guests will include Venezuelan filmmaker Juan Andrés Bello and Argentine director Gustavo Taretto on Saturday April 6. See individual listings for each date.

The festival will include screenings of films from Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina, focusing on a wide range of contemporary subjects, including, "Abel," a 2010 film from Mexico, directed by Diego Luna. Sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Detroit

This warm drama follows a young boy whose emotional problems take him in an unexpected direction. Abel is an unstable child whose issues have only gotten worse since his father walked out on the family. No one in the household is sure what to do for Abel or how they should behave around him, and a stay in a mental hospital does little to ground him. However, one day Abel wakes up and decides that he's the man of the house, and begins acting like his absent father rather than the youngest child. The film, rated PG-12, is in Spanish with English subtitles, and runs 82 minutes. "Abel" made its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

All festival events are free and open to the public with support from Aquinas College, Calvin College, Ferris State University, Davenport University and Grand Valley State University, Mexican Consulate in Detroit, Argentine Consulate in Chicago, Consulate of the República Bolivariana de Venezuela in Chicago, Consulate of Brazil in Chicago, MOSTRA, Chiaroscuro Film Series, Celebration! Cinema North and IMAX, Wealthy Theatre, Radio La Poderosa 640AM e Interferencia 810 AM, Rick Rhoane y Leandro Robles.
