GVSU 12th Conference on the Americas Workshop

A workshop, "Research for democratization?: Encounters and mis-encounters of universities and cultural politics," will be presented by Ana Rosas Mantecón, one of two keynote speakers at the 12th Conference on the Americas. Hosted by the Latin American Studies Program March 15-16 at Grand Valley State University, this years conference theme is Places, Bodies, and Practices in Latin America.

Mantecón is an anthropologist, full time teacher and researcher at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitanas Anthropology Department in Mexico since 1992. Her research has specialized on cultural consumption and artistic reception, studying cultural policies and audiences in museums, cinemas, television, video, dance halls, rock concerts; cultural tourism and urban heritage.

Mantecón will also give a lecture Social Body and Social inclusion: Cultural Practices for Restricted citizens, Saturday, March 16, from 9:30-11:00am, in Eberhard Center room 215.

Additional conference topics will explore the concepts of space, bodies and practices from different viewpoints (local or global, rural or urban, natural or man-made), and will include gender and sexualities in Latin America, cultural representations of places and bodies in art, film and literature, race, ethnicity, and space, as well as community initiatives in the U.S. and Latin America.
