This years conference theme is "Places, Bodies, and Practices in Latin America."

Research and writing by Sassen, the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, focuses on the social, economic and political dimensions of globalization, as well as immigration, global cities, new technologies, and changes within the liberal state that result from current transnational conditions.

Sassen will also present a workshop, "Immigrants and Citizens in a Global City," Friday, March 15, from 4-6 p.m. in Eberhard Center room 215.

Additional conference topics will explore the concepts of space, bodies and practices from different viewpoints (local or global, rural or urban, natural or man-made), and will include gender and sexualities in Latin America, cultural representations of places and bodies in art, film and literature, race, ethnicity, and space, as well as community initiatives in the U.S. and Latin America.
