Description
Middle East Studies presents "Koran by Heart," directed by Greg Barkertakes.

The film takes viewers to Cairo, Egypt where a global contest reading of the Quran by young Muslim children takes place annually during Ramadan. More than 100 children from the Islamic world are chosen and arrive in Cairo for the world's oldest Koran reciting contest.

The film follows two boys from Senegal and Tajikistan, and a little girl from Maldivesall of whom must go head-to-head with kids nearly twice their age in the pronunciation, recitation and perfected memorization of the Qur'an. Even as their own future hangs in the balance, they are caught between fundamentalist and moderate visions of Islam.

Free admission and refreshments. For more information or special accommodations, contact the Area Studies office, areastudies@gvsu.edu or 616-331-8110.
