Students in Art and Design at GVSU can participate in several off-campus programs and classes. These opportunities allow them to exhibit their work, expand their artistic communities and transform their guided classroom experiences into

Civic Studio

Working collaboratively, students in this semester-long seminar locate and create an off-campus venue to house a themed exhibition of their work. Recently, these class projects have focused on the connections between community, local history, performance, and public art. In addition, students explore the broader issues and skills associated with exhibition design and preparation as well as gallery management.

Crit-O-Rama
The department regularly hosts Crit-O-Rama with participation from the art departments of area colleges. This lively event enables students to meet and see the work of their peers from other institutions. Highlights include presentations from visiting artists about their professional practice and a marathon critique session where students discuss their work with the speakers and art faculty from around Grand Rapids.

Off-Site Exhibitions
GVSU students can also work with local arts organizations to obtain off-campus exhibition spaces in the city of Grand Rapids. These sites have been used for individual as well as collaborative shows and are becoming increasingly popular settings for BFA thesis exhibitions.
