Through a sequence of six courses, students explore the expressive, descriptive
and conceptual potential of printed art making in today’s world. A range
of methods is introduced at the beginning level including: intaglio (etching),
relief (woodcut), digital, and screen-printing. At intermediate levels, autographic
(handmade), photo based methods, and complex color and layering are introduced
as students work to develop a personal approach to the medium. No style, technique,
aesthetic or conceptual agenda is stressed over another so the individual quality
of a student’s work and practice, the realization of ideas and the clarity
of communication are the essential measures of achievement.
There is a well-established
tradition of dialogue between printmaking and other visual arts. Typically,
classes have a mix of students from many areas, including graphic design, illustration,
photography, and art education. We have exceptionally spacious, well-equipped
and safe printmaking studios with 24 hour access and individual work stations
for most students. In addition, the program has had an especially robust visiting
artist program in recent years including artist’s talks and workshops
with Sue Coe, Enrique Chagoya, Steven Sorman, and Deborah Riley.
