GVSU Art and Design

Painting

The goal of the painting program is to shape the development of thoughtful, capable, and inventive painters.

In addition to learning the techniques of painting, the program encourages undergraduates to examine the broader social and cultural contexts in which they create their work. At the introductory level, students establish a professional groundwork in media, materials, and processes necessary for their development as painters. As they continue in upper level courses, each is supported in cultivating a personal approach to the medium. This process includes intensive coursework, independent studio projects, critiques, and museum visits that offer students rich opportunities for reflective and engaged learning.

Students may pursue a BA or BS in Art Education or a BFA in Studio Art in this emphasis.
