WELCOME

Welcome to the Department of Art & Design at Grand Valley State University. The program has grown in recent years to include over 300 majors, 25 full-time faculty and instructors, and a beautiful 72,000 square foot facility. Students may now choose from nine different emphasis areas in the studio program as well as a major in art history. This fall we welcome Virginia Jenkins as the new chair of the department. She brings with her a wealth of experience as an artist, teacher, and administrator. We look forward to working with her during this new phase of growth and development for our program.

We have a new public events website with a calendar listing departmental activities scheduled during this year. Join us for the many lectures, workshops, and exhibitions coordinated by our Visiting Artists Program and the Stuart B. and Barbara H. Padnos Student Art and Design Gallery. We are also fortunate to have the distinguished printmaker, Steven Sorman, continuing as the Stuart B. and Barbara H. Padnos Chair in Art and Design. This year, students will work with him in a seminar on the subject of word and image as well as in a special topics course on papermaking.
