Forged in Metal: Deshi/Shihyou  Mentee/Mentor 

A showcase of jewelry and metalsmithing work from a selected group of Japanese jewelry and metalsmithing students and their mentors from Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo.  

This exhibition, hosted by the Art Gallery at Grand Valley State University, is co-curated by Renee Zettle-Sterling, Associate Professor of Art and Design from Grand Valley State University and James Bove Associate Professor of Art at California University of Pennsylvania.  

This exhibition and subsequent lectures and workshops will be an inspiring and informative look at the future of the contemporary field of Japanese metalsmithing, as well as continue the cultural and informational exchange begun many years ago.  Most importantly, this exhibition, forged in metal, will shed light on a trusted and profound relationship whose impact is felt for a lifetime, the mentee/mentor relationship.

Bill Hosterman, Associate Professor in Foundations has been awarded a four-week artists residency at Jentel Residency Program in Sheridan, Wyoming. The residency will be conducted from May 13-June15, 2012. 

Associate Professor, Tim Fisher will jury the 2-D entries for the 43rd. Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids, MI. One of the longest running festivals in the state will take place downtown Grand Rapids June 1, 2 and 3. http://www.festivalgr.org

Senior Illustration Major Monica Lloyd has been accepted into the 2012 Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition at the Museum of American Illustration in NYC, May 9 - June 2, 2012. 

Monica's work was one of 120 pieces selected from over 3,000 submissions from Illustration programs nationwide. She is eligible for one of twenty prizes worth a total of $60,000, the top prize being $5,000.

Art Downtown Event on April 13

Over 50 Grand Valley State University Art and Design students exhibited at 144 Fulton Street in Downtown Grand Rapids during the 2012 Art Downtown event. The event consisted of over 300 different artists exhibiting work at over 30 venues. The GVSU exhibit consisted of BFA exhibits in Graphic Design, Advanced Drawing, Papermaking and Image Studio exhibits. 

Preston Graves received a BFA in 2002 from the School of the Art Institute Chicago, and a MFA in 2005 from the University of Oregon.  He has taught at the University of Oregon and Highline Community College, in Seattle.  Graves has exhibited his paintings and drawings across the US.  His work centers on biological forms and evolves out of his relationship with nature.

About Anthony: Anthony Stepter is originally from Grand Rapids, MI. He studied Sociology and Marketing at Grand Valley State University and is currently in the Visual and Critical Studies masters program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While at Grand Valley, Anthony was a participant in the Civic Studio, G-rad, nest, and co-founder of Stitchy: a sewing party. Anthony worked at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Americans for the Arts before relocating to Chicago, IL. While in Chicago, Anthony has worked for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Teacher Institute in Contemporary Art (TICA) and Teaching Institute in Museum Education (TIME), as well as the Art Institute of Chicago's Museum Education Department.

As an independent organizer, Anthony has hosted and produced several events designed to create new and interesting modes of engagement around the arts. Stitchy is a monthly self-directed sewing party held at Roxaboxen Exhibitions which invites people of all skill levels to work on projects and meet specially invited guests whose work is related to fiber. Anthony is a co-coordinator of the Interlink Visitng Artist Program, a lecture series that brings artists from around the Great Lakes region to SAIC for lectures and studio visits. Anthony also serves as a graduate student representative on the Exhibition and Exhibition studies committee at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Sullivan Galleries and is a volunteer member of the Development Committee of Street-Level Youth Media. Recent projects include Call for Artists, presented during the 2nd Floor Rear Festival; Photos for Prisoners in Solitary Confinement, a prison reform project in cooperation with Tamms Year Ten; and the development of an art fair for Chicago-based art spaces and collectives that no longer exist called Extinct Entities.
