ART HISTORY
Art history courses offer students at GVSU the opportunity to examine visual arts and culture which combine traditional and
non-traditional approaches to the discipline. At the introductory
and advanced levels, students are encouraged to consider the changing cultural, political, and philosophical interpretations of
visual arts and architecture. In addition to introductory world art survey courses, students may select from a range of advanced classes that offer more intense examination of a genre, historical period, or theme. Recently taught classes include Surrealism, Medieval Symbolism, Twentieth-Century Art, Islamic Art, and
Asian Art.

Students can also receive a BA degree or minor in art history at GVSU. The curriculum is based upon an interdisciplinary model
which offers students opportunities for intensive study within the Department of Art and Design while encouraging them to develop individualized study plans that incorporate courses offered across the campus.
