Art & Design Majors
Art & Design Majors deepen their relationship to creative practice by considering the diverse roles that art and visual culture have served throughout history. Art History requirements for Art & Design BFAs include:
- Survey of Art I (ART 221) and Survey of Art II (ART 221 and 222)
- Two electives at the 300 or 400 level (such as Medieval Art or Asian Art)
- Capstone/Issues in Art (ART 495).
For students with an emphasis in Graphic Design, Design History (ART 218) is a required course counting as one of the two upper-level electives.
For all studio majors, other related courses may also be substituted if appropriate, but at least one of the two electives must be a 300 or 400-level course taught within the Department of Art & Design.
Art & Design students pursuing a BA or BS degree must take a total of 12 credit hours of Art History. A sequence of Survey of Art I (ART 221), Survey of Art II (ART 222), and one three or four-hundred level elective is recommended. Capstone (ART 495) is required as the fourth and final course.
Studio Art Majors may also wish to earn a Minor in Art History, which requires only two additional Art History electives.
