ART 422 - Islamic Art
An introduction to the visual arts associated with the Islamic world between the seventh century and the present. Key topics include the study of materials, reception, cultures in contact, plurality of meaning, and challenging traditional art historical boundaries between east and west. Selected monuments of architecture, painting, calligraphy, ceramics, metalwork, and textiles offer the basis for examination of these issues. Our exploration of contemporary art considers how artists have adapted traditional and new media to explore political activism, religious practice, and identity.
