ART 325 - 19th-Century Art

This course frames major trends of 19th-century western art within the context of the development of modern industry, popular culture, and the rise of middle class and the "society of spectacle." Movements including Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and Art Nouveau will be discussed. Additional topics include the emergence of photography and cinema, and the role of the visual arts in the "branding" of the national culture of the United States.
