VanSteeland Arboretum Composting Program:

The GVSU Arboretum was created in 1990 in an effort to encourage paper recycling on campus. It is in this same spirit that the arboretum composting program was started in 1998. The program is designed to take the shed leaves, grass clippings, pruned branches and other "waste materials" produced by the arboretum and recycle them into useful compost, thus returning many of the nutrients back to the soil and plants in the Arboretum.

On this page you will find some information about composting as well as plans to build your own composting bin.

What is Composting?

Composting is a biological process in which organic matter is broken down into a nutrient rich material for use as a soil amendment or mulch. The organic material is composted by a complex system of decomposers; including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, earthworms, and insects. A person needs only to add plant material and "turn" the pile every week or so. The microbes and other creatures do the rest.
