Congratulations to our 2007 Rick Rediske This person’s achievements in scholarship, community service, and education have brought distinction to Grand Valley. This person is described as an effective supervisor who has a positive impact on coworkers. This person is an educator and mentor to students and is considered patient, fair, knowledgeable and resourceful. This person is also a dedicated environmental scientist who works tirelessly for the advancement and promotion of science in academic circles and the community as well. His expertise in the sciences, toxicology and the Great Lakes are assets to both Grand Valley and the Annis Water Resources Institute. His research on contaminants in Michigan lakes and rivers has been noted by community leaders. He serves on several boards throughout the community and has applied for and received several grants for water cleanup and other environmental issues. Rick Rediske has received numerous honors and awards for his service to better the environment and involvement in community activities. Committment to Diversity Award Ester Burns Ester has consistently demonstrated the ideals of cultural diversity in the area of purchasing. She helps others at the university gain greater understanding of diversity through the Supplier Diversity program, which assures a diverse representation of suppliers. Ester’s work with the Michigan Minority Business Development Council, the Women Business Enterprise National Council, and the Regional Alliance for Diversity in Public Purchasing has given Grand Valley state-wide recognition. Committment to Students Award LeaAnn Tibbe LeaAnn is described as a mentor because of how she inspires and motivates students to excel. Her coworkers say she is dedicated and committed to helping students reach their potential. She is often found offering guidance to students working at the 20/20 or in the University Promotions Office. Her students say her enthusiasm is contagious and that she is more than a boss and advisor … she is a friend. JoAnn Wassenar Coworkers say JoAnn goes above and beyond her role as the Women’s Center assistant director to work with, guide and mentor students. She takes the lead in advising interns, working closely with the students and often meeting to discuss their progress and plans for the week. JoAnn is known for giving one-on-one attention to students, encouraging them to stay in school. Many of the students she has guided stay in touch with her and have become her close friends. Innovation Award Erik Stoike When the Web team learned about my idea to have virtual office hours, it was Erik who implemented the project online. Because of Erik’s hard work and creativity, I am able to communicate with a large audience in real time. Coworkers say Erik spent many hours developing the online chat system and showed a real passion for the project which utilizes the latest and greatest technology. Doug Wentworth Doug was charged with trying to reduce copy costs for the university. He was instrumental in developing a five-step plan that has significantly reduced costs. The new program eliminated a number of extra copy costs and the cost for charging back copiers has been eliminated. While a number of people participated in the program, coworkers say Doug was the person who led the initiative. Service to Community Award Michele Coffill Michele helps to tell the stories of Grand Valley as editor of the Forum and Grand Valley Magazine. Michele has committed her service to several organizations at the university, including the Women’s Commission, the Women’s Center, and the Michigan ACE Conference Planning Committee. Michele has also helped co-facilitate programs such as the Fall Welcome, the Women’s Commission Awards Ceremony, and the creation of the Women’s Commission Impact Award. She has taught as an adjunct professor of journalism and works with student interns. John Koches John is the head of the Information Services Center at the Annis Water Resources Institute and was nominated for his efforts to improve the quality of life in West Michigan. He demonstrates his service to community in many ways including his involvement with the Muskegon Area Coalition, the West Michigan Strategic Alliance and several regional watershed steering committees. He is a leader in the community by promoting the protection of watersheds and water quality … and by promoting the concept of sustainability. Outstanding Team Project Award Human Resources/Payroll Banner Implementation Human Resources, Financial Aid, Budget Office and Payroll were given the challenge of implementing an entirely new mainframe system called Banner. All the staff members involved with the project were required to impart their own areas of expertise from their current database and convert it into a completely different database … and have it work perfectly without missing a payroll within all four offices. The team began meeting in February 2005 and their Banner implementation went live January 2006. Every deadline was met. This was made possible by several people.
