Student Ambassadors assist the Admissions office in a variety of recruitment events. They generally act as tour guides and student panelists.
What is the purpose of Student Ambassadors?
Each year, more guests plan visits to Grand Valley State. The Student Ambassador program allows the Admissions office to facilitate the ever-growing population of visitors each year with events where current students can give campus tours and participate in student panels.
There is a very small time commitment associated with Student Ambassadors. They are expected to volunteer just 4-5 hours each semester, but we welcome any more help that students can give.
Student Ambassadors assist the Admissions office in a variety of recruitment events. They help with Previews, Group Visits, and Student Visitation Days. Previews are scheduled every Monday, Friday, and Saturday during the academic year. Group Visits are primarily Mondays through Thursdays, with just a few others scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays. There are two Student Visitation Days in the fall, two in the winter, and one in the summer. There are times where Student Ambassadors assist other GVSU departments such as the Office of the President, the Office of Student Life, as well as other academic departments.
Unfortunately, Student Ambassadors are not paid for their service. It is a volunteer organization coordinated through the Admissions office. There are other non-monetary rewards however, including GVSU apparel, free lunch on campus, as well as local area gift certificates.
Student Ambassadors should be positive and outgoing, and have a deep admiration for Grand Valley State. They should be comfortable speaking in front of both small and large groups of prospective students and their families. They should be excited about sharing their GVSU experience.
It is possible to join Student Ambassadors as a GVSU freshman. However, because the role integrates personal experience with GVSU facts, freshmen are asked to join after they complete their first semester.
