Grand Valley State University Athletics has just completed the inaugural "Varsity Athlete Challenge," a friendly year-long competition between alumni of Grand Valley varsity teams that encourages former student athletes to financially contribute to the university through a fund of their choice. Many of you helped this year by making a donation, so on behalf of the 550 current student athletes and coaches representing 20 varsity sports, we thank you very much!
We are very pleased with the results of the past fiscal year. Of the 3,749 former student athletes of record, there were 128 first time donors and 589 total donors (16% of our alumni athlete population) who raised nearly $220,000 for GVSU. The average gift was $370.00. The varsity team with the highest percentage of alumni participation this fiscal year (23.66%), as well as the team with the largest percentage increase in participation from last year (120%) was Women’s Cross Country. We want to congratulate Coach Jerry Baltes and the former Women’s Cross Country athletes for their dedication, which earned them the honor of winning in both Varsity Athlete Challenge categories. Coach Baltes and his team will be awarded $2,000 for their operating budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
Let’s get started on our 2015-2016 challenge today! First-time donors, who make a gift to any fund at GVSU, by December 31will have their donation tripled thanks to a 2 to 1 university match. For example, the university a gift of $500 would become $1,500. Make your gift online today at: www.gvsu.edu/alumni/varsitychallenge.
Thanks to you – GVSU continues to be the leading Division II program in athletics in the country. The Laker Athletics program just captured our 10th Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, which is the national all sports trophy. More importantly, 68% of our student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or better for the winter semester. Your GVSU Lakers are performing at a high level in the classroom as well as in their competition. Thank you again for your continued support!
