Gregory Morris, '71
After his graduation from Grand Valley State University with a B.A. in political science and history, Gregory Morris, ‘71 served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gambia, West Africa. In the following years, Morris joined the staff of Congressman James Blanchard in Washington D.C. He served Blanchard throughout his eight years in the US House of Representatives, and as Senior Staff during his subsequent eight years as Governor of Michigan. During this appointment, Morris was responsible for reviewing and recommending candidates for the governor’s consideration.
After working as a public servant, Morris joined a company in Detroit
which aimed to renovate downtown area properties. He stayed in
Michigan until his retirement in 2009 when he and wife Audrey moved
back to Washington D.C. to be close to their son, daughter-in-law, and
grandchildren.
In his retirement, Morris works as a
researcher for the Smithsonian’s William Steinway Diary Project. His
research focuses on Steinway’s political acquaintances as well as the
important buildings of his life such as Steinway Hall, the
Metropolitan Opera, and Carnegie Hall.
