Dorothy Jo Butler, '82

Motivational facilitator, speaker, and retired educator, Dorothy Jo Butler, ’82 earned her bachelor’s degree in 1967 from Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal (AM&N) College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She continued her education at Grand Valley State University where she earned her master’s in secondary education in 1982.
 
Her community involvement includes volunteering for Urban League and Mel Trotter Mission, memberships in that National Business Education Association, Negro Business and Professional Women Club, and the board for Camp Tall Turf. She has also served as the Vice President of Michigan’s NAACP and helped plan the organization’s Tutorial Program for grades 1st through 12th.
 
Butler has received many teaching awards including the Metropolitan Women's Magazine Michigan's Top Teacher Award, the NAACP Community Service Award, the Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Teacher Excellence Award, and the Community Service Award from the Negro Business and Professional Club.
 
She retired in 2008 from the Grand Rapids Public Schools. She currently resides in Grand Rapids.
