Hit the Links and Support GVSU Students - July 10

There is still time to get your foursome of Laker friends together for the 2010 GVSU Sleep Inn and Suites All-Alumni Benefit Golf Outing.  Join us at the Meadows for this annual scramble featuring 18 holes of golf, a GV logo chair, and a post-event BBQ and awards ceremony for just $95. Not ready for the tour? Then sign up for the instructional program and get tips from a Meadows pro for just $50. All proceeds benefit the Shaping Our Future campaign which will provide student scholarships, improve and expand facilities, strengthen key programs, and provide much-needed support to faculty.



Lift Boxes, Lift Spirits, Life Up Your Laker Pride - August 23

Freshman Move-InWant to be part of a moving experience? Join us for Freshman Move-In! Lend a hand to new Grand Valley freshmen by helping them move into their Allendale campus homes. It's a great way to welcome the newest students into the Grand Valley community and to meet other GVSU alums. Join us for one or both shifts: 8:30 –11:30 a.m. or 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.



Corky Meineke Memorial Golf Outing - August 4

Corky Meinecke, a 1977 GVSU graduate, died of cancer in 1997. Corky was a sports writer for the the Grand Rapids PressBay City Times, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. As a Grand Valley student, he wrote for the Lanthorn and worked in the sports information department. In 1997, members of the Meinecke family and the local print media established GVSU's Corky Meinecke Scholarship to honor his memory and host an annual golf outing to fund the scholarship. Help us continue Corky's legacy by playing in this annual event beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Meadows.

Thomas Jefferson and William James College Reunion - August 14

United StageGraduates of Grand Valley's Thomas Jefferson and William James Colleges are gathering for a reunion at GVSU's Pew Grand Rapids Campus from August 12-15. Alumni, faculty, staff and friends spanning all years of the colleges' operation are invited and welcome to participate! As part of the festivities, United Stage will be performing and hosting a series of workshops which will revisit the folk tales and childrens stories they performed on campus and in the Grand Rapids community. A special United Stage performance will follow a wine and cheese reception on Saturday, August 14 in the GVSU Loosemore Auditorium. See more information and connect with former classmates.

GVSU Young Alumni - All Dressed Up and Ready to Go!

Young Alumni Big Hat Bow Tie PartyGrand Valley's newest graduates kicked off the summer in style on June 18 - Laker style that is! Young Alumni donned big hats and fancy bow ties and took to the front lawn of Grand Rapids' beloved historic mansion, Mangiamo!, for a casual and fun-filled summer evening. Guests were treated to the smooth vocals of GV Groove, a student a capella group (check out the video) and enjoyed picnic fare, networking, lawn games, and contests for biggest hat and best bow tie! GVSU Announces Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees

GVSU has announced the Class of 2010 Laker Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. New members will include: Curt Anes, '05, football; Ed Crisman, '69, basketball; Chara Fehsenfeld, '04, volleyball; Jennifer Mackson, '05, softball; Dewey Newsome, swimming & diving coach (1984-2007); and Melissa (Sneller) Stob, '05, women's golf. They will be officially inducted at a ceremony during Homecoming Weekend October 8-9. Full Story.

  • August 7 - Raleigh/Durham, NC - Join club leader Jackie McLaughlin, '03, and fellow Lakers to watch the Durham Bulls baseball team take on the Indianapolis Indians. Tickets are just $10 and include reserved seating on the right field Home Run deck and an all-you-can-eat pre-game buffet. Get tickets.

  • Chicago Alumni ReceptionChicago, IL - The Chicago Alumni Club hosted a networking reception titled Making Alumni Connections on June 10. The event was aimed at uniting and forging connections between both established and newly relocated Lakers in the Windy City. Over 60 guests headed to Goose Island Brewery for the event. View photos.
  • Athletic Training Alumni - Graduates of GVSU's athletic training program gathered on June 24 for a reunion held annually during the National Athletic Trainer's Conference. Nearly 40 alumni headed to Philadelphia's Hard Rock Cafe' to reconnect with former classmates and new friends. View photos.
    GVDC Summer ReceptionWashington, D.C. - GVDC hosted its annual summer reception on the veranda of the Potomac Strategic Development Company overlooking the nation's capital on June 15. GVDC, one of the University's most active alumni clubs, hosted area graduates, student interns working in D.C. for the summer, and welcomed new graduates to the area. View photos.
  • Football Alumni Association - The annual Football Alumni Reunion and Golf Outing was held on June 25 - 26, in honor of the Beck football era. Tom Beck was head Laker football coach from 1985-1991. Football alumni gathered in downtown Grand Rapids on Friday evening for a reception before heading to the Meadows Saturday morning for a 4-person scramble. 95 golfers took to the links and raised $3000 in support of the Laker Football Program. GVSU 50th AnniversaryWhat did you love most about your Grand Valley experience? Was it sitting in the student section at football games? Grabbing a coffee with friends at Kirkhof? Participating in a silent march on MLK Day? To celebrate Grand Valley's 50th anniversary, Grand Valley Magazine will list Laker favorites, but we need your help. Send a brief e-mail describing your favorite Laker thing or experience to gvmagazine@gvsu.edu, with the subject "50 things," by July 14. The list will be revealed in the fall issue of Grand Valley Magazine.
