Women in Sports Celebration 2-23-13

The Alumni House was filled to capacity on February 23, 2013, for the Celebration of Women in Sport and Physical Activity. Dozens of former athletes attended the event honoring professor emeritus Joan Boand and professor of movement science Patti Rowe. Widely known guest speaker Donna Lopiano gave the crowd an inspirational message. Several other university professionals and athletics supporters were in attendance. The group enjoyed hosted food and beverage and then ventured over to the fieldhouse to watch the women's basketball team defeat Wayne State in the final seconds of the match up.

The day of celebration was created as part of the 40 year anniversary of Title IX, but more as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done relevant to equality in sport and physical activity. The Boand & Rowe Endowment for Advancement of Women in Sports & Physical Activity was established recently, and supporters of women athletics are encouraged to make a gift that is meaningful to them. The fund is named in honor of Joan Boand and Patti Rowe - two extraordinary women whose leadership and passion for activities that encourage and promote the advancement and awareness of equality under Title IX has made a long-lasting impact on students, faculty and staff members, and the community. It will provide support for students with a passion for advancing girls and women in sport and physical activity as part of their academic journey at Grand Valley State University. The fund will support both a scholarship and a leadership development award for students to attend conferences, workshops or to help fund research opportunities.

If you attended college after 1972, Title IX has affected you. Passed by the U.S. Congress that year, Title IX requires gender equality in any education program that receives federal funds. Help us celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX at Grand Valley!
