John R. Beyrle, '75, US Ambassador to Russia, to Receive GVSU Distinguished Alumni Award
John Beyrle will receive the GVSU Alumni Associa-tion's most prestigious honor during GVSU's spring Commencement Ceremony on May 1. Beyrle currently serves as US Ambassador to the Russian Federation, where he took up his post on July 2008. A career officer in the Senior Foreign Service at the rank of Minister-Counselor, Ambassador Beyrle has held policy positions and foreign assignments since joining the State Department in 1983. His overseas service has included two previous tours at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, including as Deputy Chief of Mission. Most recently he served as Ambassador to Bulgaria from 2005-08. Ambassador Beyrle received a Bachelor of Arts in French with honors from Grand Valley in 1975. |
Lakers Unite in Service During Community Outreach Week The Alumni Association would like to extend its thanks to the GVSU volunteers who participated in Community Outreach Week activities March 27 - April 3. 145 dedicated Grand Valley alumni, students and friends, volunteered their time in communities throughout the United States at 20 projects spanning 13 cities and 6 states. Participants helped further the University's mission by volunteering for a wide variety of causes; such as cleaning up parks, trails and shelters, making snacks and meals for children and families in need, improving the lives of fostered animals, and honoring the legacy of Cesar E. John R. Beyrle, '75, US Ambassador to Russia will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Linda (Nicki) Grinstead, Professor of Nursing, will receive the Outstanding Educator Award. Preview the 2010 Laker Football team at an inter-squad scrimmage at noon, then meet new Head Football Coach Matt Mitchell and the entire football staff at the post-game reception. Life 101: What You Didn't Learn in College - May 19 Presented by the Young Alumni Council, Life 101 is an opportunity to attend informational sessions on topics of special relevance to young alumni. Network with young alumni, enjoy great food and drinks, socialize with friends and learn about "real world" topics from expert presenters (who also happen to be GVSU Young Alumni!) Session Topics include; Budgeting 101, First Time Home Buying, Personal Branding & Social Networking; Cooking Quick, Easy & Nutritious Meals, Job Hunting & Resume Building; and Insurance Basics. Cost is just $10 per person and includes food and two beverage tickets. RSVP by May 12.
Alumnus Among Governor's Trustee Appointees Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm announced appointments to Grand Valley State University's Board of Trustees on March 29. Douglas W. Crim, '81, of Haslett, principal at Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone; and Matthew L. Tomasiewicz of Grand Rapids, president and consultant with Anchor Associates Inc., were appointed to terms beginning January 1, 2011. Crim earned a BBA from Grand Valley's Seidman College of Business in 1981.
Grads Lead Way in Fight Against Cancer On April 9-10 members of the GVSU Alumni Association Relay for Life® team walked for 12 hours to help raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. The alumni team raised a total of $6,510, earning them the highest per person fundraising total of the 96 teams participating and the second highest team total. For the second straight year, team captain Tim Duthler, '73, earned the top individual fundraising spot and personally raised over $3,500 for the cause. He beat out over 2,055 other walkers for the honor. View photos.
Want to help a good cause? The 2010 Sleep Inn and Suites All-Alumni Benefit Golf Outing is scheduled for July 10 and the Alumni Association is calling for sponsorships and prizes for raffle drawings. If you would like to donate a raffle prize, serve as a sponsor, or play in the outing, please contact alumni@gvsu.edu. All proceeds from the benefit will be contributed to Shaping Our Future: The Campaign for Grand Valley State University.
University Launches 50th Anniversary Web Site The GVSU 50th Anniversary Web site is live and ready for viewing at www.gvsu.edu/anniversary. The site is filled with information on the university's history, a calendar of events planned for next year, and ways to celebrate and share the spirit of this milestone for GVSU. It will be updated regularly, so check back often to get the latest anniversary news!New GVSU Screensavers Available Two new GVSU screensavers are now available for download. Share Your Sustainability Story Grand Valley's Sustainable Community Development Initiative is hosting TEDxGrandValley, an independently-organized TED event. On October 26, GVSU students, faculty, staff and community members will gather to share ideas across disciplines. Using TED's unique format, a series of speakers will deliver short talks, followed by periodic breaks to facilitate conversation among presenters and attendees. The theme will be Sustainability – A Grand Tradition. Alumni who are interested in sharing stories of how sustainability is integrated into the people, places and ideas of Grand Valley are invited to submit an abstract by visiting www.gvsu.edu/tedx. Applications are due April 22.
