              Travel

As part of the traveling team you will have a chance to see Nicaragua first hand.  If you only have a week you will be busy working with the university faculty and students.  You will be asked to share your experience and your knowledge and your time.  Many community members have helped advance the program by providing the leading faculty with new ideas direct from industry.  Come learn, give and teach.

If you have more than a week you may join us for preprogram prep, or a post program experience in Nicaragua.  In 2011 the group visited the wonderful city of Matagalpa and the surrounding mountains hosted by Nicaraguan Faculty that made the trip very special.  The group continued on to the fabled island of Ometepe.

In 2012 the group journeyed to the Solintiname Islands at the base of Lake Nicaragua.  Here they saw the famous artists, explored the islands. The team observed monkeys, hiked trails, and visited the church of Father Cardenal.

In 2013 the East Coast is being considered, perhaps a region that has not been previously explored.

              Support and preparation

Every person who wants to help can find a spot to add to the support and preparation.  It is up to you to share your skills and every effort will be made to challenge you in new and friendly ways.

Students often see new connections between theories in practice.  Faculty and students from all disciplines are welcome as faculty and students from all disciplines come from the Nicaraguan Universities. Come learn, give and teach.

A word about credits for students:  Applied Global Innovation Initiative offers no credit at this time. However, for some students the experience may work as part of a practicum, coop, independent study, or internship.  You need to make your own arrangements with your own faculty.  The faculty participating in Applied Global Innovation are pleased to comment on your participation in events, and even with advance notice arrange special opportunities that fit with your academic work. If you will be seeking credit you need to plan for this early.

In 2013 Students at the Meijer Honors College at GVSU may obtain credit through an independent study under the direction of Dr. Jeff Chamberlain.

In general Applied Global Innovation Trips while great value do not fit the profile of trips that can be supported by Financial Aid.

Faculty, if you have a research interest you can get help in many areas.  What Applied Global Innovation Initiative lacks in money it makes up in contacts.  If you are interested in a specific area communicate with the contacts.
