Parents - FERPA

What is FERPA and why do I keep hearing about it?

FERPA is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of education records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their education records, to amend the records, and to limit disclosure of the information contained in the records.

How does this affect parents or guardians?
Students who are currently (or formerly) enrolled, regardless of age or status, are the ones protected by FERPA. Students are given full access to their records either in person or by use of the University's Web site.

If you call on behalf of a Grand Valley student, the information you can expect to receive from campus offices will only include general university policies and procedures rather than specific details about a particular student.

For more information about the FERPA law, call the Student Assistance Center at (616) 331-3327 or email  regdept@gvsu.edu
