Degree candidates must notify the registrar of their intention to graduate by completing the Application for Degree card (Undergraduate or Graduate) and submitting it to the Student Assistance Center prior to the semester of graduation.
Degree candidates will be allowed 30 days after the last day of the semester or session to complete all requirements and provide evidence of satisfactory completion to the registrar. No degree will be awarded until all temporary grades are removed. After the 30-day deadline, all remaining candidates will be dropped from candidacy status, and those students must reapply for some subsequent degree date. The candidacy deadline for each semester is printed in the schedule of courses. Exceptions to this policy will be based solely on extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student. Any request for an exception must be made in writing to the registrar.

This is a temporary grade given for work that is lacking in quantity to meet course objectives. It may be assigned when illness, necessary absence, or other reasons generally beyond the control of the student prevent completion of the course requirements by the end of the semester. This grade may not be given as a substitute for a failing grade or withdrawal. Unless changed by the instructor, the I will be changed to an F (NC when appropriate) according to this schedule:

Yes, you may study part-time. A part-time undergraduate student is defined as one who takes less than 12 credit hours per semester. Please remember that part-time status may affect your on-campus housing and your financial aid, and if you are still declared dependent on your parents' income tax forms, it may affect your eligibility for medical insurance. It is also important to note, that, while we try to vary the course offering times, some classes are offered only either during the day or night.

Please allow 4-6 weeks for a FAFSA form to process and you to be notified of the award. Once you fill out the FAFSA online it can take 2-3 weeks for Grand Valley to receive the data. Once received it will take about 2-3 weeks for the award to be made. Please note that this is a typical time frame for processing. However, this could take longer if there is missing information. Grand Valley will request information as needed so please make sure your email and mailing address is updated.

Dropping or adding credits can somtimes alter your financial aid award. Financial aid is partially based on whether or not a student is half-time, three-quarter time, or full time. Before making changes to your schedule be sure to consult with your financial aid counselor.

Doing a complete withdraw can effect your current financial aid and possibly your furture financial aid. It is important to contact a financial aid counselor before you drop your classes so that you will know what you can expect.

The budget we use to figure financial aid for "on campus" is the same as "off campus" and so there is no difference in the amount of your financial aid award. If, however, you are living with your parents this would make a difference in your financial aid award. You should notify us anytime your housing status changes.

Students who repeat a course will have only the last grade counted toward their GPA, whether or not the last grade is higher. Grades of I, W, AU, or NC do not replace an earlier grade.
Students must notify the registrar of their intention by submitting a repeat grade form during the semester in which they repeat the course. Because several departments have changed course numbers, students and their advisors should determine the current course equivalent to the course taken previously.
Please note: Many undergraduate secondary admission programs and post-graduate professional programs routinely recalculate students' undergraduate GPAs to include repeated coursework. The inclusion of repeated grades may lower your overall GPA when applying to such programs. Students should consult with prospective programs regarding their policies before applying.

Most courses carry three hours of credit. To complete a bachelor's degree in four years, a student should carry a minimum of 15 hours each semester. First-semester freshmen and students on academic probation may not carry loads greater than 20 credits per semester. Students may take extended course loads, those of more than 20 credits, if such requests have been approved by the Senior Director of Advising Resources and Special Programs. To seek approval for this request, submit a completed registration form to the Advising Resource Center (200 STU) for a decision.

You may request a closed class permit from the department offering the course. However, these requests are based on space limitations and may not be granted. If you are unable to register for a necessary course, meet with your advisor for assistance.

In some instances (i.e., sickness, family problems, etc.) a student may decide to withdraw from all of his or her classes. A complete withdrawal form can be completed and taken to the Advising Resource Center (200 STU). This is not a bailout for poor grades, but rather, appropriate when unforeseen difficulties arise.
Students withdrawing from Grand Valley during an academic term must obtain a complete withdrawal form from the registrar and have it signed by the Senior Director of Advising Resources, the Director of Housing, and the Director of Financial Aid, if applicable. The completed form must be returned to the Student Assistance Center. Any refunds will be based on the date the completed form is filed with the registrar.
Students in good standing who wish to return to Grand Valley after an absence of two or more semesters must submit a Petition to Return form to the Student Assistance Center prior to registration. The form can be obtained from the Office of Admissions or the Student Assistance Center.

If you have been placed on academic review, you should meet with your advisor to review your academic plan for possible courses to repeat. You may also wish to discuss a more balanced plan based on your individual situation. Your advisor may also suggest additional resources such as tutoring or a support program to assist you with getting back on track.

To elect the Credit/No Credit grading option, a student must submit a credit/no credit form to the Student Assistance Center before the 5th day of classes at 5pm.
An undergraduate student may elect certain undergraduate coursework on a credit/no credit basis. A maximum of 10 semester hours of major, minor, or cognate courses within the major may be taken on a credit/no credit basis only with the consent of the student's major department. A maximum of 25 percent of a student's hours of Grand Valley courses earned to fulfill graduation requirements may be taken on a credit/no credit basis (Credit=C or above for undergraduate courses, Credit=B or above for graduate courses). Courses that are graded CR/NC as the standard grading scheme (e.g., internships) do not count in the maximums stated above.
Advisor consent is unnecessary if the course is an elective, a general education course, or a degree cognate. Changes from a grade to credit/no credit and vice versa will not be allowed after the first week of the semester.

If a course has a prerequisite, you must meet that prerequisite prior to the beginning of that course. Prerequisites are in place to ensure students have the proper background knowledge and will be successful in the next course. If you need further information regarding prerequisites, you should contact the specific academic department.

A "W" grade does not have any impact on your calculated GVSU GPA. However it may be taken into consideration for secondary admission or graduate programs and should be considered carefully. Be sure to speak with your advisor if you are considering withdrawing from a course.
